Zimbabwe’s main hydropower plant is operating at near-full capacity for the first time since it was revamped two years ago, enabling the country’s state utility to generate more electricity.
The worst regional drought in four decades shuttered power generation at Kariba, located near the country’s northwestern border, for more than a year and led to daily power cuts of as long as 18 hours in Zimbabwe and neighboring Zambia. Both countries rely on the lake for about half of their power.

The expansion of Hwange Thermal Power Station’s units 7 and 8, which is envisaged to add 600MW to the national grid, is progressing well, with all the geotechnical investigations having been completed and design reviews, excavations and site levelling at an advanced stage. The completion of the expansion works will help ease power supply challenges currently besetting the country;

President Emmerson Mnangagwa will next week meet representatives of major multinationals General Electric and PowerChina in a milestone indaba that will set the tone for construction of the massive Batoka Gorge Hydro Power Plant.The 2 400MW, $5,2 billion plant will be situated a few kilometres downstream Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, and Zimbabwe and Zambia will share the electricity equally.
